The Website as a Medium

A website is not a place to put a campaign. It can be the campaign. An argument for treating the browser like a canvas.

Brands still think of the website as the destination a campaign points to. The film runs on social; the print runs in the magazine; the site is where the links go. That hierarchy is inverted. The browser is the one surface a brand fully owns, the only one with motion, sound, interaction and unlimited duration. It is usually the least designed thing in the campaign.

What the browser can do that nothing else can

It can hold a film and a shop in the same frame. It can respond to the reader, to their scroll, their cursor, the tilt of their phone. It can be updated the morning after launch. It can be one file that lives for a decade. No other medium in a campaign does all of this at once.

The site as the master

If the site is treated as the primary work, everything else becomes a cut of it. The reel is a capture of the scroll journey. The stills are frames. The social posts are excerpts. The campaign becomes coherent because it has a single source, and that source is the thing the customer actually touches.

Put the film in the page and the page in the film. The medium is the same.

What this asks of the studio

It asks for people who can direct and build at the same time, or who work closely enough that the distinction disappears. It asks for tools that generate to a script rather than to a brief. And it asks for a definition of done that is not a deck, but a URL.

What it gives the brand

Ownership of the whole experience, a single asset to maintain, and a piece of work that gets better the more people look at it, because looking is the interaction. Treating the website as a medium is not a technical choice. It is a decision about where the work lives.
